The Club launches a new training class in 2016 for adult dogs (6 months and older) who have completed our 6-week Responsible Dog Ownership (RDO) Course, the Foundation Class.

The objective of this class is to help handlers and dogs transition successfully and comfortably from the RDO Course into the more advanced obedience training environment of our Class 1. As handlers graduate from the RDO program every 2 weeks, the Foundation Class is a 2-week repeating program.

During the classes, the instructor aims to help handlers reinforce exercises learnt in the RDO Course and to assist handlers still having trouble achieving those exercises with their dogs. The instructor will also help handlers fade food lures. Additional enrichment exercises will be incorporated on a weekly basis, which will provide an activity suited to pet dog training.

Exercises and activities covered in the Foundation Class include:

  • Heeling on loose lead at all paces
  • All turns
  • Automatic sits
  • Stand and Down on command
  • Stand for Examination by Instructor (movement permitted, focus is on handler’s dog accepting touch by instructor and showing no signs of fear or aggression)
  • Recall and Finish around handler
  • 20 second Sit Stay and 20 second Down Stay on lead
  • Enrichment exercise of the instructor’s choice

Note: The Foundation Class is not designed to help handlers bypass Class 1, but rather help them progress successfully in Class 1 and to eventually be ready for the Class 1 to 2 Promotion Test.

The primary purpose of the Foundation Class is to be an option for handlers who may feel they need more time to help their dogs settle in an obedience class environment, rather than repeating weeks from the RDO Course.
